Maize Bran
Maize Bran (Cattle Feed)
Maize Bran is a highly valuable by-product of maize processing, known for its rich oil content and excellent nutritional benefits for livestock. Freshly milled maize bran has a pleasant, nutty aroma and flavor, making it highly palatable for cattle. However, due to its high oil content, it is prone to rancidity if not processed or stored properly soon after milling.
The primary value of maize bran lies in its oil, which can either be extracted for commercial purposes or retained for direct use as a nutritious cattle feed. For efficient oil extraction, the maize germ should maintain an optimum moisture content of 2-3% to prevent the formation of free fatty acids during storage. Whole germ with intact cell structures is less susceptible to rancidity, ensuring better quality.
A minimum fat content of 14% is desirable for maximum oil yield. For long-term storage, the germ should be dried to a moisture level of 4-5%, followed by adequate cooling before storage to maintain freshness and nutritional integrity. Prolonged storage before processing can lead to reduced oil recovery, so timely handling is crucial.
Pelleting is a preferred processing method for maize bran, as it helps stabilize the fat content, extend shelf life, and improve handling during transportation and feeding.
With its high energy value, protein content, and digestibility, Maize Bran Cattle Feed is an excellent dietary supplement for dairy and beef cattle, promoting better weight gain, improved milk yield, and overall animal health.
